Crochet Hounstooth Pattern

I'd like to share a Work in Progress today...
A few months ago, I began working on a crochet bag made entirely in the classic Hounstooth pattern.
I began by preparing a black rectangular base to the size I was comfy with (approximately 30cm x 15cm) and simply 'grew' the bag upwards by not increasing any more.  I then incorporated the Houndstooth stitch pattern (see below).
Although in hindsight I realise that preparing the base separately from the sides would have:

- made the project easier to work with,
- made it easier to line the bag, and
- resulted in a more 'shapely' bag,
I am fairly satisfied with the way it is turning out.
What do you think?
This is very much a WIP, and has been that way for a few months.  I am STILL considering my handle options and, by posting this, I am hoping to get some advice/ideas regarding the type of handle that would best suit this particular very rectangular handbag.  I'm looking for something that's not too bulky.
Anyways, while we are busy thinking about that, let me tell you about my Houndstooth stitch pattern.  You know, this pattern is so simple I'm certain someone somewhere must have blogged about it or, in the very least, tried it out before... But, to me, it's my pattern.  I made notes as I went along, you see :-)

Houndstooth Crochet Pattern

For this pattern I used black and white acrylic wool and a 4mm crochet hook.
The pattern uses tr and dc (US: dc and sc).
The pattern requires a foundation which contains stitches / chains in multiples of 4.
Row 1:  In first colour.  Ch 2.  1 dc in next stitch.  (1 tr in each of next 2 stitches.  1 dc in each of next 2 stitches).  Repeat pattern in parenthesis till end.  End with 1 tr in each of final 2 stitches.
Row 2:  In contrast colour.  Ch 3.  1 tr in next stitch.  (1 dc in each of next 2 stitches.  1 tr in each of next 2 stitches).  Repeat pattern in parenthesis till end.  End with 1 dc in each of final 2 stitches.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you've reached your desired size.

Still waiting for ideas regarding bag handles.  Feel free to comment! :-)

  1. I really like this pattern and I think that an arc in black would be the perfect handle. I'm going to try this one myself!
